Picture this: I’m driving through a new neighborhood, windows down, eyes peeled for… well, anyone.
Let me rewind a bit.
A few weeks ago, I showed a house that my clients absolutely loved. They had questions about the upgrades and the HOA, but then came a question that stopped me in my tracks:
“Can you hear the early morning train from here?”
Now, I’d never been in this neighborhood at 5 a.m., so I didn’t have the answer. But I knew exactly how to find out!
Buying a home sometimes means getting creative to make sure it’s the right fit. Here are two “outside-the-box” tricks I share with my buyers to help them feel confident in their choice:
First: Drive by the house at different times of day. Get a feel for what the neighborhood is like early in the morning, late at night, and everywhere in between. (No need to do a full stakeout!) Are people out walking their dogs in the morning? Do you hear any noise at night? Is it super busy around school pick-up time? This will help you get a true sense of the area and see if it aligns with your lifestyle.
Second: Talk to the neighbors! If someone’s out watering their lawn, go ahead and ask if the early morning train ever wakes them up (yep, that’s what we did!). Spot someone walking their dog? Ask what they love about living in the neighborhood.
You don’t have to be invasive, but most people are happy to chat for a minute or two if you mention you’re considering a move to the area.
Some answers aren’t on Google, and sometimes even I don’t have all the answers! So don’t be afraid to go a little “old school” to make sure your next home is the right one.
